Rescue plan cuts visa fees

The government plans to waive visa fees for three months, cut the landing fee by up to 50% for airlines, and waive property tax for hotel operators for this year in a bid to revive its key tourism industry, which has been battered by political turmoil that culminated in the occupation of Bangkok’s two airports late last year. The measure will be proposed to the cabinet for approval next week. Samui hits 90% occupancy

Due to the Chinese New Year clelebrations and general tourists arriving on Koh Samui, the number of hotel bookings on the island have increased to 90% according to Mr. Phanu Woramit, head of the Suratthani office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand. This has also led to a positive knock effect to the neighbouring islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. The number of tourists in general across Thailand have dropped since the demonstrations at Bangkok’s main airport early December.
